After the recent appointment of Mark Goodson in the Real Madrid hotseat, Spanish newspaper Marca caught up with newly appointed manager for an exclusive interview post match after Sunday's victory over AC Milan.
Marca: This is arugably the biggest job in football, how do you think you'll live up to the expectations of the club?
Goodson: Firstly what an honour it is to be manager of this great club, for me the biggest club in football with a rich history of success. Of course expectations will be high and the fans of this club are known to be demanding, and for me I know what I need to deliver. I would not have taken the job if I didn't believe that I could deliver success.
Marca: Two matches under your belt, how do you rate the current team on what you've seen so far?
Goodson: I think its important for any new manager at a club to work closely with all of the players and evaluate where we are at. This team has some fantastic players and going forward we'll only be looking upwards. After the first two weeks I've learnt a lot about this team already and myself and the players are all singing from the same hymm sheet.
Marca: After drawing with Monaco in your first match you made changes in your second match and won, how do you see your team in the coming matches?
Goodson: As I say its important to work closely with the players we have. The draw against Monaco we were a little unfortunate, we played well but conceded a late equaliser. I made some changes for the AC Milan game, based on what I thought was the team best equipped to get a result and we delivered that well with a 5-2 win.
Marca: A huge match this weekend, away to table toppers Juventus. Winning here would close the gap, although many have speculated that it'd be too late now for a title push?
Goodson: Our focus is on a match by match basis, and so now my only real focus is on how we can look to get a result at Juventus. It will be a tough game as they are top of the league for a reason, but we'll be working hard all week to look to deliver the outcome that we want.
Marca: Realstically can you win the title this season?
Goodson: As I say my main focus is the next match. But to answer your question we are 4 points behind with 12 points left to play for. We need to rely on other teams dropping points, but if we can do our best to win our remaining games, starting at Juventus this weekend, then of course there is always a chance.
Marca: There has been speculation about transfers but so far little activity. Can you tell the fans what they can expect?
Goodson: As I say we have some fantastic players here, and I'm not one to make any quick panic buys. We do have targets in mind and there will definitely be transfer activity, but again need some time to evaluate what we have and where we're at. We'll only look to sign players who will improve our current squad and of course look to recruit top exciting talent for the future.
Marca: Future talent, what are your plans for youth development?
Goodson: That is something I'll be putting a big focus on. As much as we need the current squad at the top of their game its always important to focus on the future that's coming through the ranks. I have a lot to work on behind the scenes and this is of course a major priority as Real Madrid have a strong culture of developing and recruiting the best young talent.
